Ten cookbooks, #10

For the best part of two years, I’ve been art-directing and designing for the digital cookbooks start-up, 1000 Cookbooks. It’s been a fascinating and extremely […]

I share this example of how to elevate a simple subject in my workshops. Good light; a couple of choice props; a scrunch of the foil packet so that the creases might better catch the light; and several swipes of the knife to bring the surface of the butter to life.
.
Next workshop is Saturday January 30th: a few spaces still available and also taking bookings for February 20th.

When your wife makes such a wonderful dinner that you can’t not try and recreate it the following day for lunch. Roasted paprika chicken with squash, edamame, sugar snaps, baby leaf salad and bulgur wheat with a lemon and garlic yoghurt dressing. So. Damn. Good.

One of my favourite meals, from what is probably my favourite recipe book. The dish is spaghetti with roasted fennel, lemon, chilli and capers. The book is The Eagle Cookbook. Such wonderful big flavours throughout.

A few words on kindness, written for @theencouragementmanifesto, are posted on my story. They seemed as good a place as any to finish 2020. Happy new year to you all. x

A round-up of my favourite books from the last twelve months.
.
In a year so incredibly turbulent and stressful, it’s no surprise to me to see its tone and subject matter reflected in my reading matter. I’ve never found relief in looking for happy distractions when anxiety, fear or misery seem to be closing in. In a clumsy borrowing of Pinter’s appraisal of Beckett, ‘the more he grinds my nose in the shit the more I am grateful’. Events this year have pushed me towards challenging my worries, privilege and ignorance, and coming out, I hope, better for it.
.
Discovering Annie Ernaux’s writing remains the biggest prize of this year’s reading. I could easily have included ‘The Years’ and ‘I Remain In Darkness’, but settled for her quite magnificent, if harrowing, ‘Happening’. (And kudos to @fitzcarraldoeditions who publish these and many other incredible ‘niche’ authors.) ‘Recollections of my Non-Existence’ is the impressive essay/memoir by Rebecca Solnit, whose writing has come to feel so wonderfully comfortable and comforting to me. A third memoir from Emilie Pine also makes the list; ‘Notes to Self’, which is a brutally honest book like very few that I have ever read. ‘The Fire Next Time’ introduced me to the writing of James Baldwin, and allowed me to fall down hours-long YouTube rabbit holes. He, more eloquently and forcefully than any other writer I know, spells out what black men and women have had to endure in their struggle to be seen by white. Jonathan Glover’s ‘Humanity’ is the most thorough overview of the twentieth century’s most dark and troubling times, and explores how depraved our behaviour towards another human can be. It filled in many gaps in my historical knowledge. And finally, Bernardine Evaristo’s much celebrated ‘Girl, Woman, Other’ is the only fiction title to make the list and is the most beautifully and skilfully crafted novel I’ve read in years.
.

A briefly extended best list would most definitely have included Maya Angelou, Ta-Nehisi Coates and Colston Whitehead.
.
Search #MattInwoodReads to find in-depth reviews for each of these titles. I’d love to know your own favourites and if you’ve picked up anything I’ve reviewed this year.

Beautiful @beanandgoose chocolate on the table (thank you so much, @bordbia) and a glass of the beautiful Manzanilla that I was so chuffed and privileged to be involved in the rosy-cheeked genesis of. Thanks so much, @sherrymonster44 and @bar44tom of @bar44tapas: it’s a wonderful drink and a lovely memory of happier sunny times: raising a glass to you both.
