Ten cookbooks, #1

For the best part of two years, I’ve been art-directing and designing for the digital cookbooks start-up, 1000 Cookbooks. Having been on the inside looking […]

Thank you to everyone who joined for today’s phone photography workshop. The model watermelon and feta salad made for a very good snack between lunch and dinner!

It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of David Queensberry a fortnight ago, one of this country’s greatest ceramic designers, and doubtless one of its finest teachers, too, during a professorship at the Royal College of Art that spanned almost 25 years. I twice had the pleasure of photographing David and his ceramics at his London home. He was charming, erudite and generous. I was introduced to him by my dear friend, @mahamx. Maham was one of David’s students and followed his path into commercial ceramic design. One of my visits to his home was to photograph a collection of ceramics destined for the V&A. The second was to capture a new range of bowls David and Maham were collaborating on for which they had revived some old styles of glaze. Maham adored David, and David her: they shared an obvious warm affection, and a pride in one another’s work and achievements. On my last visit, David gave me one of his beautiful mugs, still on sale in John Lewis today: it’s the most beautifully designed vessel of bone china and makes drinking tea a yet greater pleasure. My abiding memory of being in his company was watching David, outside of his front door, trying to get the attention of the street cleaner, to ask if he could make him a cup of tea. He cared deeply about others. 💙 It was an honour to have my photo accompany David’s Guardian obituary yesterday, captured in the front window of his home, with his work adorning the shelves behind, and his dear friend beaming proudly by his side.
.
Maham: thank you for sharing David with so many of us. I hope the love, knowledge and creative passion that you and he shared will forever lighten the box of darkness – ‘the gift’, as Mary Oliver once put it – that you will carry forward with you.

I find it hard to post here these days: it stopped being a place for pretty photos, connection and sharing stories a long time ago. The noise and slop dominate all of our feeds; I’m guilty of getting dragged into it daily. My suggested feed is a bin fire of political agitation, football gossip and stealth selling most of the time, much of it AI-generated and soulless. I know you all know this too. And yet, I feel I should still share, even if it’s to be swallowed up in the aforementioned stew.
.
I have wanted to proudly and properly show off my dear friend @romygill’s achievements for too long. Romy begins the next chapter of her chef journey at @thepemrestaurant soon. She trusted me to join her on that journey and these are an early taster of what many will soon be enjoying when they dine at her new @conradlondonsj home.
.
Neither of us could have known we would also share in the respective losses of a lone remaining parent during the time that this next chapter was coming to fruition for her. Romy was a true friend during my mother’s final few months, checking in often and sending a personal card from Mum’s beloved ‘favourite man’, James Martin, which Mum would swoon and smile over daily. It dents an already hammered heart to think that you are now going through the same, dear Romy and yet I know you know only to keep going, and pushing forward and making your parents proud. And you will. Always touched to have your friendship and support, and touched that you let me do the same for you.
.
Romy will be opening the doors to the Pem in September.

Sunny matcha mornings at @avonfieldxtheoldtownhall. Their takeaway menu has recently just gone live, making commuting around west Wiltshire an eminently more pleasurable pastime. Lighting through @theoldtownhall.trowbridge windows really is like nowhere else I photograph. 💚

So happy for my dear friend, @romygill, who will be taking over @thepemrestaurant at the Conrad London St James from this autumn. News of the appointment broke in the Caterer magazine this morning. It was a pleasure to join Romy and the lovely team at the Pem a few weeks ago to 📸 and get a feel for just how very special this collaboration is going to be. Wishing you all the success you deserve, dear Romy. ❤️

The field last night: a simple enough vista, made majestic by low-setting light in the west. Nature’s greatest marvel is that it can show to us what we saw only yesterday and several hundred yesterdays and many thousands of hours before and make us believe that we have never stood in that moment and place previously.

I wrote about returning to work. It’s taken a while to adjust back to the rhythms and demands of work, but it’s now exciting to have fallen back into that flow and to have energy and enthusiasm for creative work once more. Grateful to the many friends (you all know who you are) I have the pleasure of working for and with, and to have some big projects — both photography and design — in the pipeline. Essay over at A Thousand Fragments, via the link in my story.

Mum, I’ll remember you by those same things that have always reminded me of you: the cherry blossom each spring, pulling blackberries in late summer, the cascading scent of rose, soft and pink above a floor of broken eggshell, and knee-high grass.
.
I’ll find you in the twinkling eyes and mischievous smiles of your granddaughters and through the shimmering soft shadows of a net curtain. Through light bulbs hung bare, sticks of coloured chalk and long-soak bath water in enamel tubs, perfumed by Imperial Leather. There too, in late-night bowls of warm-milk cornflakes; off-license treats of fondant chocolate and bags of pork scratchings; in cake-mix pastes of sugar and butter; in cherryade and ginger-beer and cream-soda thirsts.
.
I’ll hear you in the quiet of a ticking clock, and in the quietest of quiets, once more sat next to you as you sleep.
.
I’ll touch you when I hold the hand of my children who are also you, and of a wife who will hold on to me to remember you, too.
.
I’ll feel closest to you with photos and with words and with memories that have already lost a little of their shape, sharpness and certainty, but remain no less you.
.
I’ll sit with you again and again and again. Sleep for as long as you need now. I’ll be here: light, light, no longer dark.
