I’ve welcomed MiMi Aye (@meemalee) onto the account for all of this weekend. She is a Burmese food writer who has been working tirelessly to share with the world what is happening in Myanmar. MiMi’s family and friends and 54 million Burmese citizens are under military rule after the illegal power grab that took place on February 1st, following the country’s democratic elections.
.
MiMi has been using my Stories feed yesterday to post a rich account of the troubled and often tragic history of her parents’ beautiful homeland. She will be sharing more today, linking to news items and resources and sharing these with an audience that we both hope will help to connect with and enlighten new people. Please engage where you can and share where possible on this feed, BUT please go and share and engage first and foremost on MiMi’s feed – (@meemalee) – every follow, like, comment and especially every share will help others to know what is happening and how they can help. On MiMi’s profile page, you will find a LinkTree website tree with links to petitions you can sign; MP letter templates you can fill in; news sites you can educate with and resources you can easily copy and share.
.
#WhatIsHappeningInMyanmar is illegal and fundamentally wrong and the Burmese people need to know that the world can see and hear them.
.
For a full history, I’ll be packaging MiMi’s stories of yesterday to my profile highlights: please do read. And thank you to everyone who has watched the recording of the Live session stored on the IGTV channel of my profile page (3,000+ views in 36 hours) in which MiMi explains the coup and its effects so very powerfully.

MiMi’s family and friends and 54 million Burmese citizens are under military rule after the illegal power grab that took place on February 1st, following the country’s democratic elections. MiMi generously gave her time to me last night to explain what happened, her hopes and her very real fears. Please do watch last night’s conversation between us on the preceding post of my grid for an account of how terrifying an ordeal the people of Burma are living through right now: both those inside and outside of their homeland.
.
MiMi will be using my Stories to post on the current situation over today and tomorrow. She will be linking to news items and resources and sharing these with an audience that we both hope can reach a little further and connect with new people. Please engage where you can and share where possible on this feed, BUT please go and share and engage first and foremost on MiMi’s feed – (@meemalee) – every follow, like, comment and especially every share will help others to know what is happening and how they can help. I am only a few hours more enlightened than those of you reading the hashtag at the top of this post for the first time. It takes a fraction of that time to know that #WhatIsHappeningInMyanmar is illegal and fundamentally wrong and that the Burmese people need the world to let them know that we see and hear them.
.
Thank you, MiMI, and thank you if you can stay following along this weekend.

Burmese fried chicken from ‘Mandalay’ by @meemalee, a book of Burmese cooking. A wonderful lunch with a firey (and I mean 🔥😂) chilli salsa on the side. A wonderful recipe and beautiful food and an opportunity to segue towards a couple of Instagram firsts ahead of me this weekend...
.
I’ll be handing my feed over to MiMi from tomorrow morning for the entire weekend to dedicate it to raising awareness of #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar following the military coup that was staged on the first of February. MiMi has spent the last three weeks doing just this on her own platforms, with many of her family and friends living in fear and potential danger in cities spread across Myanmar (Burma). We hope it will bring a new audience to the struggles that are being so poorly reported here and, indeed, across much of the world. Any engagement with these posts and the stories that I share today and which MiMi will be sharing across Saturday and Sunday will help to create more visibility and understanding of #WhatIsHappeningInMyanmar. And any engagement – likes, comments, shares – that you can carry out over at MiMi’s feed will be even more vital, as she will continue to be sharing this story and its urgency for many days and weeks to come, I fear. Please do consider sharing and following if you can.
.
MiMi and I will be live here on Instagram at 5pm sharp this evening to preview her weekend takeover of this platform and to discuss the problems facing the people of Myanmar and why they should concern us. I’d love for you to tune in and to stay with MiMi for a weekend that should enlighten and concern many and help to raise much needed awareness; because that is the route towards enforcing change.
.
And for those of you who are here for the food and the food alone... I’ll be back on Monday and, in the meantime, you can find the recipe for MiMi’s wonderful fried chicken over at @nigellalawson’s nigella.com.

When a country democratically elects a government and that country’s military then seize power in a coup – illegally preventing the formation of the parliament the people voted for – and then represses the freedoms of its people and its media, and deploys weapons of misinformation, violence and murder against those same people, other countries and people can not afford to remain silent.
.
I’m sorry that my own voice hasn’t been added sooner to the many others fighting against the injustice happening in Myanmar right now. With so much else to keep so many of us worried in these times, you should know, simply, that one petition signed or one post made or one news item shared is all it takes for a friend and neighbour to open their eyes and engage too. I owe a debt to @meemalee, who is living through this nightmare with far more on the line than I could ever comprehend. There are links being posted to my stories this evening thanks to resources all shared by MiMi, who is using so much of her time and energy to collate and keep these current. Her feeds, here on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook will give you a more up-to-date picture on the current state of affairs and what we can do. And her latest @themsgpod podcast episode shares an interview with a citizen from the capital city of Yangon about the situation on the ground. If you can, then please share, shout and show your support as profoundly as possible.

Today’s workshop image, and looks like it’s dal for dinner! Thank you to all who joined me for today and hope it’s inspired you all in your own efforts here on Instagram. Next workshops are 6th March and 13th March. Only a few spaces available on the former date, including two no-pay spots for those who cannot afford to pay through job loss, furlough, illness or whatever other problems this world and pandemic have thrown your way. Just DM me to register your interest; only two no-pay spaces per workshop, but I’ll run another exclusive one if there is enough interest.

Setting up for today’s Zoom phone photography workshop and setting myself up for the day while I’m at it. Gorgeous light this morning, coupled with yesterday’s sourdough and yesteryear’s best tin plate. A few mushrooms and fresh herbs, all embarrassed by a knife’s end or three of good salted butter, @feastsandfables.

Lentil stew on hummus was the first thing to pop up on the feed this morning (beautifully prepared and photographed by @rebelrecipes). Six hours later, I knew I’d try and pimp something similar from what was available here. Indian-spiced, onto hummus with a splash of coriander chutney and a scattering of mint and coriander. Ready for the afternoon, and think I might have exempted myself from today’s run....

I spent yesterday shooting with @clayshyderabadi. A train journey to Reading felt like a treat; stepping into a restaurant even more so; and seeing how two very lovely people have managed to turn their young restaurant business into such an impressive meals-at-home delivery service was the icing on the cake. Well, the icing on the cake was the breakfast of dosas cooked up by Nandana yesterday and today’s lunch of green chicken and paratha from the food I was sent on my way home with.
.
And a huge thank you to @mahamx for supplying such beautiful plates to shoot everything on. ❤️

The most amazing Valentine’s meal box from @thegrapesboa. Thank you so much, @tony_casey; I really don’t know how you’ve managed to make the two of us feel like we’ve spent the last couple of hours indulging in your restaurant. I had the soft box set up and so grabbed a snap of each incredible course.

Salmon gravadlax with avocado wasabi, beetroot tartare and puffed rice

Chocolate ganache, orange sorbet, burnt white chocolate and dehydrated chocolate mousse

And petits fours to finish!

Incredible value and I’m completely stunned at how you’ve managed to translate everything to such a memorable experience in our own home. Thank you! 🙏 (I hope the plating was up to standard 😉.)
