In 'What We Owe Each Other’, Minouche Shafik looks at the way that different societies of the world exercise power over their citizens via ‘the social contract’. Each state applies control over the lives of the people who it presides over. We relinquish certain freedoms in the hope that the ones that remain will be satisfactory. We cede authority over our individual lives and put our trust and hopes into the hands of just a few elected officials. They maintain or tweak the social contract. Shafik suggests that now is the time to completely rewrite it.

The terms of the contract are critical. There are top and bottom red lines in most countries, such as providing support for society’s most vulnerable and setting limits on the power, assets and resources available to those with the very most. Even so, millions are still allowed to slip through the net, while others meticulously cut through the restrictions which bind all others.

Across the world, the social contract is failing.

The contract must radically change in order to combat Big Tech companies amassing wealth beyond the GDP of many countries, and to address climate concerns which put the planet on the precipice of irreversible environmental collapse. Gender and racial equality issues and the future of work in an automated world forever seem to be tomorrow’s problems rather than things we must answer today.

There are many uncomfortable questions. How do we assess the risks of our age (in an age of so much misinformation)? How do we foster collective responsibility (in a time of increasing polarisation)? How do we encourage individual responsibility (when the gap between those who have and those who do not is wider than ever before)?

Many solutions are here, but Shafik is most successful at framing and articulating the questions. By necessity, the answers are various and complex, but she warns that we must stop ignoring the problems. So it’s a book that needs to reach those who for too long have kept their blindfolds on. And it’s a book with ideas to disrupt those elite and powerful few who strive to continue to produce yet more blindfolds. A sobering, but absorbing and rewarding read. #MattInwoodReads

In between finishing one job and packing bag for a next, I finally got to put a first living subject in front of the beautiful @woodrow_studios canvas backdrop. I can’t tell you how at odds these serene captures of Safi were to the frenzied blur of limbs and head that I tried to get sitting still for five minutes. She’s so different our dear departed Bo, and we wouldn’t want her any other way. ❤️ Thanks for such a beautiful portrait wall, Tom!

My next phone photography workshop is Saturday February 12th. It costs £75 and runs over Zoom from 10am-3pm with a Q&A session afterwards. I teach the basics of phone photography — ways of thinking, seeing and doing — followed by a practical demonstration to show styling, photographic techniques and phone camera handling. I’ll finish with a run-through of the most important aspects of Instagram practice, from hashtags to algorithms. Ten per cent of every ticket sold is donated to @trusselltrust and the workshop is recorded for you to access for a fortnight after the live session. DM or email me for any more details. Seeded oat bread. Brilliantly creative stuff to get kids cooking, from ‘Green Kids Cook’ by @jennychandleruk. Yoghurt, porridge oats, treacle (I substituted with honey) and mixed seeds. The tastiest soup-soaker-upper I’ve ever dunked!
